History of Skechers

Skechers, established in 1992 by Robert Greenberg, is a global company that designs, develops, markets, and distributes casual, active, and dress-style footwear.

At the outset, Skechers initially targeted men as their primary market. However, from 1992 to 1993, progress was limited as the CEO, Robert Greenberg, was focused on promoting other brands which took attention away from Skechers. The turning point came in 1993 when Skechers introduced the 'Chrome Dome', a unisex, grunge-style boot. Paired with ripped jeans, these boots set the style trend for 1993 and positioned Skechers as a fashionable brand. This strategic move elevated Skechers' presence in the retail sector, leading to partnerships with Foley and Nordstrom and attracting active, style-conscious consumers with affordable pricing.

Within just six years of its establishment, Skechers had launched over 30 standalone stores. In April, Skechers made strategic moves, positioning itself in direct competition with Reebok and Nike. The company leased a 54,000 square foot area at the World Congress Center in Atlanta, previously occupied by Nike, for a trade show. This move proved to be a success, with a significant $2 million purchase that helped Skechers solidify its position as a major player in the athletic footwear industry.

By September, the company received an offer for its own space at Macy's central New York location, amidst fierce competition from other brands.

In November 2014, Skechers celebrated the opening of its 1000th store in Mexico.

In January 2015, Skechers Performance took on the role of the official footwear and apparel sponsor for the Chevron Houston Marathon. Additionally, all Central Eastern Europe Distribution was transitioned from a third party to Skechers CEE during the same period.

Skechers is headquartered in Manhattan Beach, California and is currently led by the founder and CEO, Robert Greenberg, alongside his son, Michael Greenberg, who serves as the company's president. With Greenberg's five sons, daughter, and niece also part of the workforce, Skechers could be seen as a family-run business. Skechers U.S.A. Inc. has a vast global presence, with over 1,000 Skechers stores in more than 50 countries spanning 6 continents. Apart from the United States, Skechers products are accessible in over 120 countries worldwide.
